Bruised reed
A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench.
Matthew 12:20
What is a bruised reed and smoking flax ? A bruised reed is a plant that has been crushed or damaged by nature like wind or rain and a smoking flax is the thread in a lamp which has almost burnt out or dimly burning or has been blown by the wind.
This verse is a prophesy fulfilled. God gave this prophecy to Isaiah and it is written in Isaiah 42:1-3 and this prophecy describes the nature and character of God who will be born in flesh and walk among us. Yes this is the character of our LORD Jesus Christ. He does not break and throw away an already broken plant or put off a thread which is dimly burning.
In today's world, everyone looks for the best. When we hire people to do a particular job, may be a repair man or a Plummer, we look for the best. We look at his reviews in google and make sure he has the best rating. This is how world operates and anything which is not the best and damaged is thrown away, neglected, push down in the society, and given a low status.
But the character of our LORD Jesus is different. He does not neglect or throw away the broken or put off the flax which is burning low, but rather He makes the weak strong, He makes the low burning flax to burn brightly, He cares for the lowly, He cares for the broken. He came to heal the broken hearted and the faint. His character is to give importance to those who have been neglected and disregarded by society.
Are you today feeling insignificant, incapable, not of any use, have not achieved anything as per world's standard, not studied in best school or college, does not have a proper degree or not the favorite in the family. You are the one Jesus is seeking, to make you the head and not the tail, to make you strong and burn brightly. He is gentle and loving and does not condemn you but loves you very much. So approach LORD Jesus, He wants to do good to you and make you a blessing.
