Garderner's Need
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
John 15:2
Pruning is when the gardener selectively remove branches from a tree. The goal is to remove unwanted branches, improve the tree’s structure, and direct new, healthy growth. Pruning is one of the best things a gardener can do for his trees. A proper prune is both an investment in the long-term health of the plants and in the overall look and safety of it. Pruning fulfills the gardener's need. The gardener needs the tree to bear more fruit than what it is already bearing, hence he prunes it.
In today passage, Jesus talks about a similar pruning in a believer's life. When we are saved, that is believing, Jesus is Lord and Savior, we are expected to bear fruit. What are the fruit that Jesus our gardener expects us to bear ? It is mentioned in Galatians 5:22, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. In the beginning of our salvation experience we may not bear these fruits and Jesus who is our gardener prunes us which enables us to bear fruit. Pruning process is painful, God allows certain sickness, loss, struggle in our lives, so that through the challenges we get to know our Lord Jesus better and change our old ways and start bearing fruit, like loving others, being kind, have self-control etc. Pruning is for our own good, it removes unwanted bad character that is in us, removes dead things which are still hanging to us, and make us grow stronger and healthier spiritually which leads to physical well-being as well. This is what our Gardener Jesus wants, that we prosper and be in good health as our soul prospers. So today be of good courage when you face trials and tribulations, it is for your own good. You are in the safe hands of your gardener, Lord Jesus Christ.
